Naruto USA

As you may now, the rights to the animated version of the uber-popular Manga Naruto have been bought for U.S. distribution by Cartoon Network.

How much will they tone it down ? What will they cut? How might they change it ?

Here's a dark look at what may happen. (courtesy of VG Cats)

Triumph vs. Star Wars

Ah yes, Star Wars fans are great for lining up before the movie.... for me to poop on!

Here is a very long, very funny, very sarcastic look at the fans lining up for Episode I as they deal with Triumph, the insult comic dog.

Kaiju Pocky !

ATTACK OF THE GIANT POCKY !

pockybigstick

I am starting off my quest to try every kind of Pocky with a bang.

Giant Pocky scales quite nicely, providing all of the chocolatey goodness and pleasing crunch of the normal variety.

Another benefit: The giant pocky box makes me feel so small and dainty. It is bliss.

giantpocky1

Giant Pocky, with regular sized Pocky and Lando Calrissian for scale.

On a scale of... um... Ninja Scroll, with Jubei being the best, I give Giant Pocky :

1. Jubei - Uber Ninja !
2. Genma - Immortal Ninja
3. Shogun of the Dark
4. Tessai - Rock Ninja
5. Yurimaro - Lightning Ninja
6. Shijima - Shadow Ninja
7. Benisato - Snake Ninja
8. Mushuro - Blind Ninja
9. Sakuro - Explosive Ninja
10. Oshizo - Wasp Ninja

24 Hour Comic is up

Hey everyone, my 24 Hour comic attempt is up.

Check back to read the finished version soon.

The aftermath

You have a new Picture Mail

Well, I wanted to blog the 24 hour comic day process as it happened, but alas our internet connection wasn't working.

Here's a little behind the scenes for you.

The challengers:

You have a new Picture Mail

Me

You have a new Picture Mail

Ryan T.Y.

Start time: 7pm Friday, April 22nd.

Ryan started with a title page - "The Adventures of..." but ran out of room, so he could only fit "The Advent". He tried to make this title work, but eventually had to redo the cover. Precious moments lost !

At one point I needed a picture reference for fire, so Ryan set his kitchen on fire.

You have a new Picture MailYou have a new Picture MailYou have a new Picture MailYou have a new Picture Mail

Ryan drew and inked his entire comic by 12pm Saturday. With 7 hours to spare! He did a great job, but has doubts about attempting another 24 hour comic.

I basically worked non-stop for the entire 24 hours. I didn't really start to feel tired until 6pm on saturday. My head did feel like it needed to come off my neck, though.

I had decided to download pictures from my camera phone and create the second half of the comic in photoshop. Serious technical difficulties delayed my efforts.

When the clock struck 7pm on Saturday, I was not done. I had only completed 16 out of 24 pages, barely more than half. After 24 hours of intense focus, it really was a bitter disappointment.

Here is my incomplete version, and I plan on creating a 'redux' finished version as well.

As a person who needs deadlines to function, I like the idea of committing 24 hours on banging out a project. I may try this with script outlines and other projects. Would I try it again ? Yes. I think with more people and a less ambitious process it could be fun.

24 Hours to Go - OH !

International 24 Hour Comic Day

(Voice Over) The following comic takes place between 7pm Friday and 7pm on International 24 Hour Comics day. Events occur in real time…

"Right now I am preparing to participate in the 24 Hour Comic challenge. My girlfriend will miss me. The people I write with may be involved. My name is Jeff Carter. I’m a web comic artist. And today I’ll make the longest comic of my life."

It’s almost here! Saturday April 23rd is International 24 Hour Comic Day. Thousands of people around the world will attempt to create a 24 page comic in 24 hours.

The 24 Hour Comic Dare was created by Comic Guru Scott McCloud.

I'm really looking forward to it, and I will post the finished comic on my website.

I'll try to blog the process as well. Wish me luck!

Bananasss...er...Braaaains

I had a very eerie dream last night. It was a mix of various zombie stories and Outbreak, culminating in a very dreadful scene.

In this dream I was a scientist. I know that there is a virus, being transmitted by MONKEYS, that turns everyone into ZOMBIES.

The Monkeys are enraged, ala 28 DAYS LATER. They are attacking and biting anything that moves.

I’m sneaking around, moving as slowly and quietly as I can. Every once in a while a roving pack of monkeys will find me and stare at me. I play possum for hours, but I need food and water. I also need to escape to my lab, where I can work on a cure.

Somehow I contract the virus. It starts off as a flesh eating bacteria, and I begin rotting while I am still alive. No one will help me because they think I’m a zombie.

Zombie people and zombie monkeys are standing around everywhere, silent sentries forever watching for victims. Swarms of living monkeys are scampering around and hunting for people to bite.

That's the last time I eat a monkey before I go to bed.

Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Bat Cave !

Last sunday my girlfriend and I visited Bats in the ole BAT CAVE.

Bronson Caves, as it is also known, are caves dug out of a quarry in the Hollywood hills. These caves were used as sets for several tv shows and movies, the most famous being the old Batman show.

If you are in the L.A. area and would like to visit, here's a good site with directions. The caves are about 10 minutes up the trail.

Robot Dance Party

Robot Alert !

The Nuvo is the latest robot from Japan. Built by ZMP Inc., these 15 inch tall humanoids can patrol your home and send pictures to your mobile phone.

They walk, pick themselves up after a fall, respond to voice/remote/cell phone commands, and of course, like all new robots... DANCE !

They seem particularly built to do 'the monkey'. Perhaps in a slight dig at the
Robot vs. Monkey struggle ?

Read more about it here on Red Nova's news site.

And check out Plyojump, a REALLY good site about hyperactive robots.

I'm a Kung Fu Hustler, baby

Kung Fu Hustle was awesome.

Shaolin Soccer was fantastic, and if this film does well, hopefully we can look forward to more films from Stephen Chow.

I can't wait to see what he'll come up with next.

Sony's Kung Fu Hustle website has cute little games. I like the Axe Gang Rampage game. It's very simple, but you get to chuck axes at people.

APE Con 2005

I made the roundtrip drive to San Francisco for APE CON this saturday.

The roadtrip was fun and the con itself was very interesting. APE Con is affiliated with the San Diego Comic con, and it is the Alternative Press Expo.

I was excited to meet some of my favorite web comic artists, including Derek Kirk Kim ( Lowbright ) , Jason Shiga ( Fleep ) , Lark Pien ( Long Tail Kitty ) , and Joshua Hale Fialkov (Western Tales of Terror).

Derek Kirk Kim @ APEcon 2005

They were really cool, and I was able to repay them for their great free web comics by purchasing some neat stuff. Jason Shiga even tossed in a free graphic novel !
(longest transaction in history).

I attended two of the panel discussions. The first was by Deni Loubert of Novelgrafx.com , a company that plans to bring comics to cellphones. Interesting stuff.

The second was "Secrets of Self Publishing". I'm afraid I can't tell you what was discussed, but the panel was good. I really want to check out Javier Hernandez's El Muerto.

I was a bit dissappointed by how so much of the self published stuff looked the same. The 3 common motifs were robots, kittens, and cephalopods in pastel colors. I guess I fall into many of the same trends, so I shouldn't judge. It's just striking how you can feed a generation of creators the same pop culture and most will invariably produce the same kinds of comics and illustrations.

Still, there were plenty of stand out artists, and I collected samples of lots of interesting stuff. I'm glad I went, and I hope to have a project of my own for next year's APE con.

When Mars Attacks

Here's a really cool web comic called Nine Planets without Intelligent Life. It's a philosophical interplanetary roadtrip story, following two vagabond robots in a post-human future.

Right now the robots are stuck on Mars.

Sin City

My main fear was that SIN CITY was going to be like SKY CAPTAIN, a lifeless, stilted movie of bored and confused actors posing in front of green screens. SIN CITY was better than SKY CAPTAIN. It was a lot better than ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO. But was it a good movie? Not really. Could it have been great? I think so.

Kudos to Director Robert Rodriguez for breathing some life into the Sky Captain approach. I think he succeeds here where George Lucas fails. No doubt Rodriguez’s flexibility and energy on set was crucial, as well as his ability to adopt and adapt new filmmaking techniques.

They got the look down perfectly. Some of the casting choices were inspired. Elijah Wood was perfect as Kevin the Ninja Cannibal. Mickey Rourke was probably the only person I would want to see play Marv. Bruce Willis and Clive Owen did very well with the material. Rutger Hauer and Benicio Del Toro were likewise comfortable in familiar roles. The rest of the casting was distracting at best.

I have only read one Sin City graphic Novel – The Long Hard Good Bye. This story, featuring Marv, Kevin, and Goldie was the best part of the movie. This chapter deserved more breathing room and screen time. I think if this part was expanded and the last two parts were cut the movie would have been great.

I admire Rodriguez for making a bold, risky, and experimental project. I just wish he had taken more time with it. Even after my disappointment in the theater I still can’t stop thinking about the trailer. The trailer will stay in my mind, along with Marv and Kevin from the Graphic Novel, somewhere between memory and imagination. That’s the movie I want to see.
