Monday's Comic - Doc Rockstrong Part 6

This last installment ended up being 2 pages, although I would have loved to have the fight run for several more.

I started this particular project with a clear idea of what style I wanted to achieve - very simple 2D environments and people with only the Monoliths standing out in heavily shadowed 3D. The idea was to allow for faster illustration, pausing only to give the monolith's extra weight.

Instead, I ended up putting multiple special effects (shadows, glow, etc) on nearly every element in the comic - hats, grass, sky, crystals, people, etc. I am happy with my new fonts, however.

I may bring Doc Rockstrong back for another story, but it will look much different from this first one. I hope you enjoyed it - and go learn about the statues of Easter Island - they are extremely cool.

Faster Comics, Kill ! Kill !

I've been on a real bender this week, binge clicking through webcomics.

I'm always looking for a faster way to get comics done. My current comic has proven particulary time consuming and has further aroused my need for speed.

Here's one of the many great webcomics I've found that is hugely entertaining without being hugely detailed.

This one's called Wondermark . Clip Art toons rule.

I must now enter Phase II of my plan - Invade Japan.

I have made contact with a vendor in Japan and am awaiting exciting new kinds of Pocky.

In the meantime I will revisit some of my favorites and update the blog with other odd Pocky stuff, like the picture above.

Tomorrow I'll be heading down to the 2005 San Diego Comic Con with some friends.

My partner and I will be seeking artists for our Graphic Novel. We'll be
handing out flyers that look like this:

ARTISTS NEEDED !

LA based creators seeking diligent artist/illustrator to team up on a supernatural graphic novel set in WWII Europe, involving the Holocaust and monsters both real and imagined. Ideal penciler would be familiar with the shadowy images of Mike Mignola and Frank Miller (with a dollop of Eddie Campbell) at their best, but bold enough to slap us over the head with an interesting, unique style if he/she feels it better fits the piece.

Scientist in Japan have unveiled their most life like robot to date.

The Repliee Q1

This robot was designed to promote the virtues of lace gloves.


In this video clip from the manufacturer's official website a man in shorts and sandals harasses a very sleepy robot woman. They really need to teach this robot to say "Ow, quit-it".

But don't think you can harass this sleepy robot woman for long!

It's only a matter of time before she spawns the creepy midget Repliee R1's.

Sure, they may have green alien bodies of their own, but they'll skin you alive just for the fun of it.

So remember, DON'T POKE THE ROBOTS !

Pocky Day Review - Azuki and Whipped Chocolate Mousse

Flavor: Azuki
Notes: Azuki is a 'sweet red bean paste'. A traditional japanese treat, it shows up in cookies, ice cream, etc. An azuki loving friend of mine was excited to try them, but says that they don't really taste like azuki. No one else was able to place the flavors either - guesses ranged from 'Fajitas' to 'Burnt cinnamon toast crunch'. While not bad, per se, it certainly wasn't very good.
Rating: 4 out of 10 (because I didn't like it, and because it didn't taste like the real deal)

Flavor: Whipped Chocolate Mousse
Notes: I am trying to close out the 'Mousse' category on my pocky list. I'd give my own notes, but this review I found at Animecastle is perfect:
"these pockys are so delicious, their flavor is to glory and its chocolate flavor is huge, 2 months ago my cousin went to study to japon, and when my prime return, brought 2 boxes of pocky flavor chocolate (small and giant) of strawberry, of mousse of chocolate and of almond, when it observes them seemed rare to me... but when I them probre... I could not stop to eat, if you have not tasted pockys..... you plows an idiot"

Land of the Dead...dogs

I don't think I'm going to see Land of the Dead, at least not in theaters.

My gripe is this: The zombies here are actually somewhat smarter... some even use tools and communicate.

Then what is the point of having zombies as the villain? Why not aliens or...pirates.

Of course, a thinking enemy is one that can be outsmarted.

"Attention slightly intelligent zombies ! You can have all the fresh brains you want ! They are conveniently inside your head."

End of problem.

Sigh.

Oh, and zombie dogs.

Pocky Day - Coconut Chocolate and Lemon Cheesecake

Flava: Coconut Chocolate
Notes: Definitely one of the nicest Pocky boxes I've seen
Rating: 6 out of 10 (I don't like coconut, but it's a well made pocky)



Flava: Lemon Cheesecake
Notes: In the Caramel Pocky review, I compared the flavor to lemon cooler cookies. This made me wish for Lemon Cooler Pocky, and the Lemon Cheesecake is pretty darned close (but without that white powdery stuff)

Calling Monster island...

Yesterday I saw a link to a site called 'Monster Island' on Kung Fu Monkey.

I checked it out, thinking of that strange old japanese monster movie of the same name...

Only to be ambushed by ZOMBIES.

Monster Island is, in fact, a serial novel by David Wellington. He has 3 books up for free at his blog www.brokentype.com/monster and a download for your ipod, as well.

I'm hooked - this is scary, crazy, good writing. Check it out.

Pocky Day Review - Choco Banana & Caramel

Flava: Choco Banana
Notes: Not very chocolatey, but the overall effect is smoother than plain banana.
Rating: 7 out of 10.



Flava: Caramel
Notes: Japanese caramel has more of a lemon cream/yogurt taste, and this pocky tasted like "lemon cooler" cookies. If they concentrated on making lemon cooler pocky that would be great.

This is crazy. Miniature dogs AND miniature monkeys through the mail ?!

As cute as that dog is, I'd think that the offer of the free monkey would headline
this ad, but no. It's dog, polaroid camera, tiny radio, THEN monkey.

The monkey, sad at this placement, actually tries to sell himself!

Poor little monkey. I wish I could order you now and give you a home at no cost, but no doubt I would get nothing but a tea cup full of dry old monkey bones.


Hmmm... I only count 6 monsters in this picture.

Waitaminute...that lady in the corner is attacking that man! She is the 7th,
and most terrifying plant monster!

Note the other plant monsters watching her intently, learning from the master.


DAMN. Damn damn damn.

Why didn't I order this and learn to utilize and draw on the enormous
physio-mental powers which now lie dormant in my own body ?

For $5 you could get the Ninja's incredible Stars of Death, deadly
Retrievable Stone, AND learn how to be invulnerable IN YOUR SLEEP.

The illustration is a great selling tool - The attacker with the knife,
obviously thinking about how deadly ninjas are, misses the
business man and collides with his partner. Then EXPLODES.

That, my friend, is the awesome fear inspiring power of the ninja at work.

Pocky Day Review - Strawberry and Reverse White

Flava: Reverse White
Notes: Reverse white was okay, it kinda tasted like a lite version of an oreo-cookie. I think I am biased against it because the Reverse chocolate is one of my favorites.
Rating: 6 outta 10

The Strawberry Pocky Conundrum

Strawberry pocky is definitely going to be one of the speed bumps on my Pocky Quest. Most of the flavors and boxes are different enough that I can tell them apart and mark them off my list regardless of whether the box is described in Japanese or English.

But there are many kinds of strawberry.

Today I had some kind of strawberry, but I'm not sure which one.

It definitely had strawberry chunks - making it Tsubutsubu Ichigo (crushed strawberry).

The box I had was white with the strawberry chunks on the pocky.

It looks like box #1, but it is white. Box #2 has 40% more bits, and box #3 has 50% more.

Oddly, the inner package doesn't even match the inner package shown on the back of the box.

I know I'm obsessing, but I need to focus if I am to sample every type of Pocky known to man.

Flava: Strawberry bits (?)
Notes: Better than the plain strawberry. Extremely fragrant.
Rating: 6 outta 10.

Flava: Pocky Chocolate Crushed Almond Honey White
Notes: I think the chocolate is "white chocolate"...maybe with honey ? I'm not sure how to compare this with Crushed Almond Mild, other than this tastes less like flavored coffee. Not bad, not great.
